Ognian Bozikov, created a video/ a VFX short film after he was granted a 3-month sabbatical at the Art Institute of Colorado.

In the spring of 2011 I was granted a 3-month sabbatical at the Art Institute of Colorado which gave me the opportunity to play with some VFX tools and workflows.

I am greatly indebted to Sal Christ who was infinitely patient and cooperative, and to Kip Kuepper who turned my incoherent thoughts into a soundtrack.

Video | Maya 2013 | Viewport Technology | More

Maya 2012, Viewport 2.0, Technology, Preview, video, review

Maya Viewport 2.0 Technology Preview

New Viewport 2.0 features: Viewport 2.0 now supports animation and rigging features such as HumanIK, joints, motion paths, ghosting and playblast. Image plane support is also included as well as a new depth peeling transparency algorithm. In addition, support for several other shaders and tools, and polygons, NURBS and dynamics features have been added. Furthermore, Viewport 2.0 now includes widespread improvements in tumble performance of large scenes
and in animation performance with large or complicated scenes.

New render passes added: Two new multi-render passes have been added: UV pass and world position pass. A UV pass converts UV values to R/G values and creates a rasterized version of UV space. Using a UV pass, you can replace textures in 3D renderings as a post-process without the need to track new textures in place. A world position pass converts position (x,y,z) values to R,G,B values. Use the world position pass for relighting workflows in compositing.

Mandelbrot 2D and 3D texture: The new Mandelbrot node allows you to texture your model with the Mandelbrot set. You can create a 2D version of this node (Mandelbrot), a 3D version of this node (Mandelbrot 3D), or shade a fluidShape node using the built-in Mandelbrot texture. The Mandelbrot set is a set of mathematical points in the complex plane, the boundary of which is an interesting fractal shape. Through this node, you can select the Mandelbrot Set, the Julia set, the Mandelbox set and other hybrid evaluations. Using this node, you can add interesting effects to your Mandelbrot set fractal, such as circles, leaves, points, checker patterns, and Pickover stalks. Choose among different shading methods and customize the range of the color values used to represent your
Mandelbrot set points.

New substance textures and functionality: You can now automatically bake a substance texture to disk to render it with mental ray for Maya, IPR, or other 3rd party renderers. The following new substance textures have also been added: Clouds_2_Animated,  Impact_01, Make_It_Tile, metal_plate_009,  Plasma_Animated, Space_Ship, Sunshine, Water_Drips, Waves, Windscreen_Glass_01. The new Make_It_Tile substance texture allows you to easily and seamlessly tile a file texture.

New callbacks command added: The new callbacks command allows you to extend the Maya UI with your own components. Use this command to add your own callbacks to standard Maya hooks without the need to overwrite Maya MEL files. Currently, Maya hooks are provided for the Hypershade, the Create Render Node dialog, and Attribute Editor templates.

Free image planes: You can now create a free image plane. A free image plane is an image plane that is not attached to the camera; one that you can select and transform in your scene. Select Create > Free Image Plane to create one.

mental ray rendering support for GPU cached Alembic files: mental ray supports the rendering of GPU cached Alembic files, including baked diffuse
color information if the GPU cache was used to create the Alembic file.

New mental ray BSDF shaders: Built in BSDF (bidirectional scattering distribution function) shaders from NVIDIA mental images are now exposed in Maya. You can find them by selecting Window > Rendering Editors > Hypershade > mental ray > Materials. For more information about these shaders, please see the mental ray shader documentation.

mental ray version 3.10: Maya now uses mental ray version 3.10.

ATOM Animation Transfer
Now artists can transfer animation between characters via the new ATOM (Animation Transfer Object Model) offline file format—another element of the new Open Data initiative. ATOM natively supports keyframes, constraints, animation layers, and Set Driven Keys, enables artists to more easily repurpose existing animation data as new characters are created.

Trax Clip Matching
Artists can now more easily visualize how motions within two or more Trax clips match in order to adjust how they blend together. Clip Ghosts enable animators to view the start and end frames of clips as skeletal wireframes in the 3D view; clips can be manually matched with the help of these visual cues, or automatically matched using a choice of options for translation and rotation

THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Ogilvy | Creates IPL Season 5 Cricket carnival

Ogilvy India has created a carnival themed film to announce and promote Season 5 of the Indian Premier League scheduled from 4 April to 27 May 2012. The film features Makrand Deshpande acting as the ‘Master of Ceremonies’ taking the protagonists and the viewer on a journey to experience the carnival’s various delights.

The film opens with two school boys wondering about the noise coming from the other side of a wall. One of them looks through a peep hole on the wall and sees a carnival in progress. A guy dressed as the host for an event whistles out to them and shows them a way in through a loose board on the wall. Once inside, the boys take in the atmosphere and enjoy the various rides and games suitably named after particular cricketers' characteristics playing for the IPL. The film ends with one of the boys gesturing to the host in a manner of asking "what is this?", and he replies, "Yeh IPL hai boss".

Ogilvy | Creates IPL Season 5 Cricket carnival

Abhijit Avasthi, national creative director, Ogilvy India, said, “An evening spent with the Indian Premier League is a crazy time. Every match is a series of ups and downs. Twists and turns. Screaming. Shouting. Anxious moments. Exhilarating moments. It is all this and more. So we thought . . . hmm. . . can we possibly compare the IPL to a day spent at an amusement park? Given what a rollercoaster of a ride each game is? The film evolved from there.”

Pointing out that cricket as a passion is a given in the country, Anup Chitnis, executive creative director, Ogilvy India, added, "But the IPL is a format that is refreshing in its approach and presentation of cricket. Our communication also had to do the same. We had to be fresh and unique in the way the excitement and thrill surrounding the IPL was portrayed."

Anders Forsman, director, B-Reel Films, added, “The script was a collaboration between me, the creative team at Ogilvy Bombay and the production team at Bang Bang. We threw some ideas around and landed on the story of two boys stumbling into this funfair that works as a metaphor for a night at the IPL, where every night you go on a emotional roller coaster.”

Explaining that IPL is a carnival of passion, sheer talent and skill, engaging all your senses, playing the role of a fun-filled family outing or an exciting evening plan for friends with ease, Anuraag Khandelwal, senior creative director, Ogilvy India, said, "IPL is where the world's best talent comes together and each player leaves you with a unique experience, every evening. Doing this film was immensely satisfying, given the details and the scale it demanded, which the IPL brand demands."

Satish deSa, creative director, Ogilvy India notes that the film is the truest reflection of everything that IPL stands for. "This film could only be inspired by the IPL, made by the IPL, and run by the IPL. It is huge, spectacular, entertaining, thrilling, noisy, bright and colourful. It captures the sense of wonder and awe a wide-eyed child feels standing in the middle of a carnival. For us, that's exactly what IPL does to each one of us for 57 days. Yeh IPL hai boss."

Elaborating on the production that went behind this film's shoot, Roopak Saluja, co-founder and managing director, Bang Bang Films, said, “I can't even begin to describe what an experience this has been for Bang Bang - massive sets, precision miniatures and slick visual effects, to create what is arguably the country's biggest television advertising extravaganza of the year. Teaming up with Anders Forsman and co-producing this project with B-Reel was an excellent decision that led to an exhilarating production for all involved.”

The campaign teasers began airing on February 26 while the complete film went on-air from 6 March.

Still left to watch the movie, But some friends say the story of  John Carter the movie is quiet bad, but says the VFX is kickass or in better words the Best on screen till now.

TheDaily posted a video on youtube about Bringing Alien Worlds to Life in 'John Carter' John Carter. Were they got some behind the scenes, greens screen. Some VFX breakdowns for the moving city in the John Carter movie.

Video | Bringing Alien Worlds to Life in 'John Carter'

It might seem odd to picture a mile-long city crawling along the surface of Mars, if not for the 12-foot tall barbarians, fantastic environments and exotic creatures also featured in Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter.”

The new Disney/Pixar film tells the story of a Civil War veteran transported to Mars in Stanton’s first live-action effort after directing the classics “Wall-E” and “Finding Nemo.”

Hundreds of visual effects shots were required to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series — written in the early 1900s — to the screen, thanks to artists at Double Negative, Cinesite, MPC and Nvizible.

Cinesite animated complex computer-generated geometry, including 674 legs, to create the walking city known as Zodanga, which moves along Mars as a giant mining machine.

The visual effects team also placed live-action actors shot against green screens inside Zodanga, and then added in scores of details such as towers, tents, tables, dust, flying ships and even motion-captured city-dwellers.

“This was big, big scale,” Cinesite production director Courtney Vanderslice told The Daily, “and the challenge really was, can we render it and actually get it through the pipeline?”
