"Sintel" is a computer-generated short film that was created as part of the film project "Durian". The "Durian Open Movie Project" was funded by the Blender Foundation and serves the further development and testing of free software, especially the 3D graphics software "Blender".

Work began in May 2009. The film was officially released on September 27, 2010 at the Netherlands Film Festival.The online release was made available for download on September 30, 2010.The film was viewed over 1,000,000 times within a matter of weeks. The premiere of the short film "Sintel" took place in September 2010 at the Netherlands Film Festival. "Sintel" is also to be seen at SIGGRAPH Asia 2010.
Concept of the film: guidelines on the contents were from the beginning a female main character and an action-packed, emotional and epic story. The goal was to visually compete with Hollywood animation films and to deliver stunning images in 4K resolution, with a correspondingly high level of detail. Thus, the film should appeal to more than the previous productions of the Blender Foundation to a wide audience of young people and adolescents.
The primary goals of the film project "Sintel" were promoting the software Blender by affiliated with the film visibility through new learning materials resulting from the project and through a technical development. This focused mainly on the following areas:
• high-resolution modeling, and rendering Sculpten
• simulation of fire, smoke and explosions and render the results as volumetric objects
• make compositing resolution independent (target: post renderings of 4k)
• mass simulations
• Improve library system for the management of major projects
• make the Blender 2.5x series ready to productive work
