Spider-man 3 | Facial Capture Animation Process

Remington, Thomas Haden Church, Sandman, Eddie Brock, Venom, James Franco, Harry Osborne , Goblin, Spider-man 3, Facial Capture Animation , making, vfx, behind the scenes , wallpaper, video , poster

Remington supervised and directed performance capture sessions featuring Thomas Haden Church (Flint Marko / Sandman), Topher Grace (Eddie Brock / Venom) and James Franco (Harry Osborne / Goblin) for "Spider-man 3".

In the 'Birth of Sandman' sequence, Remington worked closely with Animation Supervisor Spencer Cook and Character Setup TD Brian Burks to ensure that the erosion of facial features did not remove Thomas Haden Church's expressiveness that was key to conveying the characters emotional state.

Spider-man 3 | Facial Capture Animation Process

Utilizing clips of performance capture from actor Thomas Haden Church that were recorded before principle photography began, Remington sampled elements of a calibrated library of muscle and facial motion in order to modify the performance for director Sam Raimi's approval. Although timing and actions were recombined and sampled into a new performance, the facial motion retained it's essential uniqueness of Thomas Haden Church's muscle actions, which allowed his personality to 'read' through the digital sand simulated character.

The facial pipeline for "Spider-man 3", including rigging and animation was overseen by Remington.
The Sony Imageworks FACS pipeline was integrated as a secondary system to punch up facial detail such as furrows, wrinkles and deformations where markers didn't exist.

Framestore | Wrath of the Titans | Jonathan Fawkner

Framestore, Wrath of the Titans, Jonathan Fawkner, VFX, article, news, making, movie, wallpaper, poster, cover
Visual Effects Supervisor Jonathan Fawkner talks about the visual effects Framestore did on Wrath of the Titans.

from the Art of VFX article:

How was the collaboration with director Jonathan Liebesman?
JL as we called him to distinguish him from JF (me) was fairly easy to work with. He had a pretty good idea about what he wanted to see and how he wanted it to look. He had established an aesthetic for the movie and he was always wanting it to look filthy, which of course we had anticipated so we had plenty of cg dirt and dust on hand to chuck into the mix. That would generally make him happy. But that aesthetic also affected shot selection and camera style which we were careful to try to replicate in our full 3d shots. He and the editor were generally happy to receive suggestion, during the shoot and in post which makes the whole process more collaborative.

How was the collaboration with Production VFX Supervisor Nick Davis?

This time around Nick Davis was 2nd unit director as well as VFX supervisor, so that brought a new perspective on things. He needed to rely more heavily on me for one thing in his absence, but it also meant he had a deep understanding of how the shots were conceived, and had more influence on the look and feel of the movie. He and Rhonda Gunner and the whole team were fun to work with and it felt like a really positive joint effort.

What have you done on this movie?

We were responsible for the sequence involving 3 cyclops that chase and fight with Perseus. We also took on the Labyrinth, involving a huge rock tower, a mechanical doorway, and the ever moving and collapsing interior.

Avengers Epic Effects | Battle for NYC | ILM

Robert Downey, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Avengers, assemble, trailer, poster, wallpaper, cover, vfx, cg
Industrial Light and Magic has pulled out all the stops for the mind blowing visual effects of The Avengers. ILM, created New York, in full CG, as it was hard to shoot in the Biggest city in the world and with the action scenes .

Jeff White,  visual effects supervisor for ILM, takes us through the video.

Most of this destructive battle was shot on the streets of Cleveland (which has less restrictive rules on pyrotechnics) and a green-screen stage in New Mexico.

ILM then combined these elements with detailed panoramic imagery of the buildings and streets surrounding the Viaduct.

Using techniques similar to Google’s Street View, ILM crews shot super-high-resolution, 360-degree images of the immediate area, first at 100 feet above ground level, and then hanging from rooftops.

Once these images were assembled in a virtual environment, additional elements were added to bring the scene to life:  animated cabs, drifting smoke and even computer-generated building interiors.

Simulated explosions, shattering windows and crumbling concrete were all rigged to react to the impact of the characters as they smash into and through the scenery.

BreakDowns | The Making of UFC Evolution | Digital Domain

BreakDowns, Making, UFC Evolution, Digital Domain, logo, wallpaper, poster, ad, cover, vfx

The above image is of  Digital Domain.

Here's a breakdown of the elements Digital Domain  used to create the new UFC show opener, "Evolution".James Atkinson  served as VFX Supervisor, with Neil Huxley directing and Karl Denham as CG supervisor (full list below). The process began with rotoscoping archival footage to create mattes for the fighters (some of which standard def and quite old). They then previzualized CG action to fit the fight moments and build a narrative of destruction and creation. Compositing the fighters to fit in this new environment was a painstaking process involving hundreds of FX and CG elements.

Still left to watch the movie, But some friends say the story of  John Carter the movie is quiet bad, but says the VFX is kickass or in better words the Best on screen till now.

TheDaily posted a video on youtube about Bringing Alien Worlds to Life in 'John Carter' John Carter. Were they got some behind the scenes, greens screen. Some VFX breakdowns for the moving city in the John Carter movie.

Video | Bringing Alien Worlds to Life in 'John Carter'

It might seem odd to picture a mile-long city crawling along the surface of Mars, if not for the 12-foot tall barbarians, fantastic environments and exotic creatures also featured in Andrew Stanton’s “John Carter.”

The new Disney/Pixar film tells the story of a Civil War veteran transported to Mars in Stanton’s first live-action effort after directing the classics “Wall-E” and “Finding Nemo.”

Hundreds of visual effects shots were required to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series — written in the early 1900s — to the screen, thanks to artists at Double Negative, Cinesite, MPC and Nvizible.

Cinesite animated complex computer-generated geometry, including 674 legs, to create the walking city known as Zodanga, which moves along Mars as a giant mining machine.

The visual effects team also placed live-action actors shot against green screens inside Zodanga, and then added in scores of details such as towers, tents, tables, dust, flying ships and even motion-captured city-dwellers.

“This was big, big scale,” Cinesite production director Courtney Vanderslice told The Daily, “and the challenge really was, can we render it and actually get it through the pipeline?”
