Framestore | Wrath of the Titans | Jonathan Fawkner

Framestore, Wrath of the Titans, Jonathan Fawkner, VFX, article, news, making, movie, wallpaper, poster, cover
Visual Effects Supervisor Jonathan Fawkner talks about the visual effects Framestore did on Wrath of the Titans.

from the Art of VFX article:

How was the collaboration with director Jonathan Liebesman?
JL as we called him to distinguish him from JF (me) was fairly easy to work with. He had a pretty good idea about what he wanted to see and how he wanted it to look. He had established an aesthetic for the movie and he was always wanting it to look filthy, which of course we had anticipated so we had plenty of cg dirt and dust on hand to chuck into the mix. That would generally make him happy. But that aesthetic also affected shot selection and camera style which we were careful to try to replicate in our full 3d shots. He and the editor were generally happy to receive suggestion, during the shoot and in post which makes the whole process more collaborative.

How was the collaboration with Production VFX Supervisor Nick Davis?

This time around Nick Davis was 2nd unit director as well as VFX supervisor, so that brought a new perspective on things. He needed to rely more heavily on me for one thing in his absence, but it also meant he had a deep understanding of how the shots were conceived, and had more influence on the look and feel of the movie. He and Rhonda Gunner and the whole team were fun to work with and it felt like a really positive joint effort.

What have you done on this movie?

We were responsible for the sequence involving 3 cyclops that chase and fight with Perseus. We also took on the Labyrinth, involving a huge rock tower, a mechanical doorway, and the ever moving and collapsing interior.

The above image is of  Digital Domain.

Here's a breakdown of the elements Digital Domain  used to create the new UFC show opener, "Evolution".James Atkinson  served as VFX Supervisor, with Neil Huxley directing and Karl Denham as CG supervisor (full list below). The process began with rotoscoping archival footage to create mattes for the fighters (some of which standard def and quite old). They then previzualized CG action to fit the fight moments and build a narrative of destruction and creation. Compositing the fighters to fit in this new environment was a painstaking process involving hundreds of FX and CG elements.

VFX Supervisor at Framestore | Talks about vfx in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadow

VFX, Supervisor, Framestore, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadow, wallpaper, poster, logo, cover, studio, cg

from the The Art of VFX article:Sirio Quitavalle, Visual Effects Supervisor at Framestore, talks about the vfx in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

What is your background?
I studied Physics then entered the industry as a trainee at Framestore working in the longform television department on shows such as WALKING WITH DINOSAURS.

How did Framestore got involved on this show?
I’m not sure on the exact decision making process but our work on the first SHERLOCK HOLMES, the production being based in London and Framestore’s great reputation were probably all factors.

How was the collaboration with director Guy Ritchie and Production VFX Supervisor Chas Jarret?
Guy and Chas knew each other well from the first movie and they had a great understanding. Chas was great to work with and was always pushing the boundaries, whether with new camera rigs, robotic arms or even flying his own model helicopters to get the perfect angles for the effects shots. Guy is a larger than life personality both onset and during post review sessions which he always brought to life with his colourful turns of phrase.

VFX, Supervisor, Framestore, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadow, wallpaper, poster, logo, cover, studio, cg

What have you done on this movie?
Set extensions and stunt cleanups for the fight with the assassin; environments, green screens, steam train and lots of explosions for the train battle; environments for the alpine sequence, a lot of cg breath and a big, ultra slow motion fall of a waterfall for the finale.
