Ogilvy | Creates IPL Season 5 Cricket carnival

Ogilvy India has created a carnival themed film to announce and promote Season 5 of the Indian Premier League scheduled from 4 April to 27 May 2012. The film features Makrand Deshpande acting as the ‘Master of Ceremonies’ taking the protagonists and the viewer on a journey to experience the carnival’s various delights.

The film opens with two school boys wondering about the noise coming from the other side of a wall. One of them looks through a peep hole on the wall and sees a carnival in progress. A guy dressed as the host for an event whistles out to them and shows them a way in through a loose board on the wall. Once inside, the boys take in the atmosphere and enjoy the various rides and games suitably named after particular cricketers' characteristics playing for the IPL. The film ends with one of the boys gesturing to the host in a manner of asking "what is this?", and he replies, "Yeh IPL hai boss".

Ogilvy | Creates IPL Season 5 Cricket carnival

Abhijit Avasthi, national creative director, Ogilvy India, said, “An evening spent with the Indian Premier League is a crazy time. Every match is a series of ups and downs. Twists and turns. Screaming. Shouting. Anxious moments. Exhilarating moments. It is all this and more. So we thought . . . hmm. . . can we possibly compare the IPL to a day spent at an amusement park? Given what a rollercoaster of a ride each game is? The film evolved from there.”

Pointing out that cricket as a passion is a given in the country, Anup Chitnis, executive creative director, Ogilvy India, added, "But the IPL is a format that is refreshing in its approach and presentation of cricket. Our communication also had to do the same. We had to be fresh and unique in the way the excitement and thrill surrounding the IPL was portrayed."

Anders Forsman, director, B-Reel Films, added, “The script was a collaboration between me, the creative team at Ogilvy Bombay and the production team at Bang Bang. We threw some ideas around and landed on the story of two boys stumbling into this funfair that works as a metaphor for a night at the IPL, where every night you go on a emotional roller coaster.”

Explaining that IPL is a carnival of passion, sheer talent and skill, engaging all your senses, playing the role of a fun-filled family outing or an exciting evening plan for friends with ease, Anuraag Khandelwal, senior creative director, Ogilvy India, said, "IPL is where the world's best talent comes together and each player leaves you with a unique experience, every evening. Doing this film was immensely satisfying, given the details and the scale it demanded, which the IPL brand demands."

Satish deSa, creative director, Ogilvy India notes that the film is the truest reflection of everything that IPL stands for. "This film could only be inspired by the IPL, made by the IPL, and run by the IPL. It is huge, spectacular, entertaining, thrilling, noisy, bright and colourful. It captures the sense of wonder and awe a wide-eyed child feels standing in the middle of a carnival. For us, that's exactly what IPL does to each one of us for 57 days. Yeh IPL hai boss."

Elaborating on the production that went behind this film's shoot, Roopak Saluja, co-founder and managing director, Bang Bang Films, said, “I can't even begin to describe what an experience this has been for Bang Bang - massive sets, precision miniatures and slick visual effects, to create what is arguably the country's biggest television advertising extravaganza of the year. Teaming up with Anders Forsman and co-producing this project with B-Reel was an excellent decision that led to an exhilarating production for all involved.”

The campaign teasers began airing on February 26 while the complete film went on-air from 6 March.

2012: India will do lot more in animation

2012: India will do lot more in animation
The year 2012 will reset the pace of growth of India's gaming and animation businesses. What happened in mature game and movie markets like the US, Europe and Japan over three decades will take place in India in a much shorter time, and the coming year will be the inflection point.

Cost-effective smartphones, computing devices, internet and social media will fuel the appetite for games, animated content and consoles among young and the old alike. People have started consuming such content even on DTH (direct to home) TV platforms.

Developed markets moved gradually, from coinoperated arcade machines to computer games to consoles to games on handheld devices , internet games, mobile games and social games. "In India, it is sort of happening at one go and all these platforms are going to push the growth of the industry in a big way," says Rajesh Rao, CEO of Dhruva Interactive.

The year 2011 upped the ante in animation for fulllength feature films. Tintin, Rango, Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2, Rio, Cars 2, Happy Feet 2, Smurfs and Gnomeo & Juliet took animation to a new level.

Biren Ghose, country head of Technicolor India, says India had a hand in many of these movies. "India also worked on movies in the Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and X-Men series. This is a quantum jump in the level of expertise and a tribute to local artists and technicians," he says.
Technicolor India did a significant amount of work for DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots. The Indian crew included animators, lighting artists, special effects experts, atmosphere and volume metric experts, image rendering specialists, secondary animation experts and simulation specialists.
Ghose says a lot more visual effects work will happen in India. "The estimate is over 20 major international titles will have value addition from Indian VFX studios," he said. India is a lower cost destination for global film studios, and talent too is rapidly improving . The growing domestic market is also spurring animation action.

Rajiv Vaishnav, vice president in IT industry body Nasscom, says 2012 will also see a major mindset change. "The outlook for the industry is changing with parents increasingly allowing their children to pursue careers in animation, visual effects, graphics or game development. It was an eye opener for the industry when a parent came along with his son to a recent Nasscom game developer conference in Pune,'' he says.

Many co-production treaties have been signed by leading Indian animation and gaming players like DQ Entertainment, Crest Animation, Technicolor Bangalore, GreenGold, Tata Elxsi, Red Chillies, PrimeFocus, Rhythm & Hues, Anibrains and Toons Animation with studious and producers in Canada, Britain, America and many parts of Asia.

The impact of these agreements will unfold next year and beyond.

3D animation films to be showcased in IFFI 2011

iffi 2011, goa, india, wallpaper, poster, cover, logo, 3d animation
3D animation films are all set to make a splash at IFFI 2011 in Goa with projection technology at the festival venues being enhanced to showcase these new generation digital movies.

"This year, 3D animation films would be brought in the festival. Its (3D) a special category which is in the evolutionary stage," IFFI's Steering Committee Chief Mike Pandey told reporters here.

He said these films would be showcased in theatres where there is projection facility to support the format.

"This technology is less expensive," said Pandey, a well known wildlife filmmaker. Films like Avatar made with 3D technology have been a big success and highest revenue puller, he said.

The Steering Committee of experts, which has been constituted to weed out the possible bottlenecks, met today and decided on various aspects of the festival.

The Committee also has well known filmmakers including Shaji N Karun and A K Bir on it, who are guiding the organisers on the holding of the festival.

The festival deviating from its conventional format has also decided to hold competitions like 'One minute film' organised by Indian Documentary Producers Association (IDPA).

The young filmmakers would have to produce a one minute film on 'Incredible India, which would be considered for the competition in the festival, Pandey said.

IFFI 2011 would be held in Goa from November 23-December 2 in Panaji and Margao.

Also, the International Film Festival of India is going to have a complete makeover with the proper branding of the event to ensure that there is uniformity in everything.

IFFI Director Shankar Mohan told reporters today that from this year onwards the fest would be more global and people-friendly.

"We will be introducing open air screening of the movies for non-delegates," he said.

The decision of making IFFI more people-friendly was taken in the high level meeting held here under chairmanship of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.

Mohan said that attempts are made to have a complete face-change of the festival.

"There will be uniformity in the design. Also, the entire film festival will have uniform theme," the director said adding there would be proper logo and colour scheme for IFFI.

Mohan said the inaugural ceremony would be held in Margao city in the state-run Ravindra Bhavan auditorium while concluding ceremony would be held at Kala Academy in the capital city.

The IFFI organisers admitted that there are certain logistical concerns as both the venues Margao and Panaji, are situated 40 kms away from each other.

"We are trying to address those concerns," he said. State Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava said the formal MoU between Goa government and Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting would be signed on September 9.

The MOU is finalised and Goa has been retained as a permanent venue for the festival, Srivastava said clarifying the doubts over the future of the festival in the state. Goa has been hosting IFFI since 2004, when the festival traveled here from Delhi.

The state government has formed Entertainment Society of Goa, a nodal agency that works for the organization of the mega-event in association with Union I & B Ministrys Directorate of Film Festival.
